HANS J. WEGNER

Hans J. Wegner is a milestone in Danish design history, and was one of the few Danish designers who successfully put Danish design on the world map. He was referred to as one of the few designers to master the skill of the chair, and over his lifetime he designed nearly 500 chairs, all of which in varying degrees changed the character of Danish furniture design.

Wegner was not only part of the golden age of Danish design, but was, along with other iconic designers such as Arne Jacoben, Børge Mogensen and Finn Juhl, a pioneer of Danish furniture architecture. Wegner's character permeates the entire Danish furniture industry, and today it is possible to find a Wegner design in every corner of the world map.

Wegners history

Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark, and throughout his childhood he had a natural fascination for woodwork and sculpture. At the young age of 14, he began his apprenticeship with the Danish master carpenter H. F. Stahlberg. Here his character and his understanding of the structure of furniture blossomed, leading him to move to Copenhagen in 1936 to study at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts.

In 1943 he started his own design studio in Aarhus, after being brought to Aarhus to design furniture for the new Aarhus City Hall. In the years that followed, until his death in 2007, he designed, sketched and produced some of history's most iconic chairs, and initiated several collaborations across Danish designers and furniture factories. Today his designs are produced by several major Danish furniture factories such as Fredericia Furniture, GETAMA, Fritz Hansen and PP Møbler. All are striving to keep Hans J. Wegner's legacy alive and to pass on Wegner's passion and great love for design and not least furniture.

Wegner's design philosophy and designs

Since his early childhood he was fascinated by woodcraft and sculpture. He managed to incorporate this fascination in his designs in the form of expressionist forms with a sculptural character and unique use of the qualities of wood. When Wegner designed a new piece of furniture, he took an almost scientific approach to the design. He studied the proportions of the body as well and translated his observations into well-considered designs and ergonomically brilliant furniture. But despite this complex approach, Wegner's goal was to simplify the chair's construction into the most authentic and honest version of the chair, leaving only its comfort and personality in its purest form.

In his many active years as a furniture designer, he created a number of well-known icons that express his design philosophy in the most beautiful way. In 1949, he designed The Round Chair - also known as The Chair - which achieved extreme popularity when it formed the setting for John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon's first presidential debate in 1960. In 1960 he designed the Ox Chair - a chair that appears in thousands of homes, films and exhibitions around the world. One of the designs that has achieved the greatest popularity is the Wishbone Chair, which flourishes on the Danish furniture market and is seen in many Danish homes. Other furniture such as the Cigar Chair, Peacock Chair, Chinese Chair, Papa Bear Chair and Butterfly Chair are a notable part of Wegner's portfolio.

Det betyder at vi ikke overtager gæld, ordrer eller forpligtelser fra det tidligere Byflou, og at vi hverken juridisk eller økonomisk kan hjælpe med tab opstået der.

Vi ved at det for nogle er mere end en ordre — det er tillid der er blevet brudt. Den tillid ønsker vi at gøre os fortjent til igen.
