Dining table lamps - Lighting in the heart of the home

For many, the dining room is the heart of the home. It's no longer just a space reserved for sharing dining experiences, but has also become a place to work, have conversations and read the newspaper. Therefore, the right lighting is a necessity to create the ideal environment and atmosphere in the heart of the home.

Light has endless functions and it can be challenging to find the right type of lamp to suit the room, the size of the dining table and the function of the lamp.

In open and bright rooms, the most important function of light is to create an atmosphere. Lamps with opal glass can provide a soft and diffused light that adds a sense of warmth to the room, while a 360-degree pendant will illuminate the entire room. Large bright rooms also offer the opportunity to experiment with larger lamps that play with the properties of light and can cast beautiful shadows into the room.

In a darker and smaller room, the lamp's main function is to illuminate the room and provide a focussed light over the table. Here, an open pendant is a perfect choice as it both illuminates the ceiling above the dining table and provides a centred light above the table. A closed pendant, on the other hand, will only provide a focussed light over the table, which is perfect for reading and writing.

Whatever lamp you choose to adorn your dining room with, how you mount your lamp is crucial. The goal is an even light that doesn't block the view, hang too far apart or have the wrong proportions.

Firstly, consider how big your lamp should be in relation to the size of the dining table and whether you need one or more light sources.

You typically work with a distance of 80 centimetres when hanging several pendants over a dining table. For larger pendants, a distance of 60-75 centimetres is ideal so as not to take up too much of the view. Smaller pendants need 55-65 centimetres from the tabletop.

Hanging dining table lamps is often an experimental process and it's therefore a good idea to test several heights before mounting the lamp. At the same time, different heights and distances can also help to give the lamps an even more interesting and playful look that may better suit your personal interior design.

Classic dining table lamps

The Danish design heritage has a large selection of iconic pendant lights by great Danish designers. Lamps that have illuminated private homes and official buildings for decades. The classic lamps are characterised by their timeless design and their importance to the history of Danish design, and they are always a winner when it comes to quality. At Byflou, we especially love classics like Verner Panton's 'Pantop' with its retro look and Frandsen's 'Ball Pendant' in exclusive metals.

Experimental dining table lamps

For many lamp designers, creativity is at the forefront when creating new lighting options. They experiment with playful shapes, the properties of materials and, not least, how light can be manipulated. Lamps like these often have an eye-catching design and become a statement piece in the interior that is just as much a decorative feature.

Nordic dining table lamps

An ever-loved form of lamp design is the Nordic white lamp. Every brand with a passion for lighting has its own version of the stylish white lamp and the possibilities in terms of shape and material are endless. At Byflou, we recognise that a lamp should last a lifetime and our range reflects this mindset. We offer a stylish and quality-conscious alternative to cheap white lamps from IKEA or ILVA, for example. Our lamp range explores materials such as rice paper, opal glass and aluminium, which all reflect the Nordic white expression.

Minimalist dining table lamps

Sometimes a home requires a more discreet form of lighting. Either to maintain a minimalist decor or to compliment an extravagant decor. What characterises minimalist lights is the discreet and sophisticated design where the primary focus of the light is to illuminate the room. However, designers rarely compromise on the exclusive look of the lamps and therefore use materials such as brass, copper and opal glass. Many of the very simple lamps use LED light sources to maintain the minimalist look and create an ideal light over the dining table.
